Pets & VETS by Kate Pillsbury, DVM SUNBURNED PETS Dogs and cats are as vulnerable to sunburn as humans, especially those animals who have less hair, are shorthaired, or who have thin or white fur. Most animals have spots on them that are more vulnerable, such as snouts and ears, which means that all pet owners should take care to protect their animals from sun overexposure. The best line of defense from the sun is to allow plenty of shady places outside for dogs. If the animal goes on hikes often or spends lots of time outside, use vet-approved sunblock. While cats don't go on walks quite as often, they love to sit in sunny spots afforded by windows. Consider treating the windows with UV-blocking film. The responsibility of pet ownership includes providing protection from hazards of all kinds, including sunburn. The philosophy of our practice at Cody Pet Hospital is to encourage preventive, compassionate care for all animals. We treat all the pets that come to us as if they were members of our own family. IF YOU HAVE ANY PET CONCERNS, OR IF YOU WOULD LIKE AN APPOINTMENT FOR COMPREHENSIVE PET CARE, PLEASE GIVE US A CALL AT (508) 384-5904. LOCATED AT 5 SHARON AVE, IN NORFOLK. WE ENCOURAGE YOUR QUESTIONS AND COMMENTS AND WILL ALWAYS HAVE THE TIME TO TALK WITH YOU. CodyPetHospital.com P.S. If no pet sunscreen is available, pets can use unscented sunscreen that is appropriate for infants.
